Students: Requesting Teacher Recommendations if Your School Uses Scoir

Customer Support Team Updated by Customer Support Team

If your school uses Scoir, you can request teacher recommendations directly from your My Colleges page. You’ll request your recommendation, and once your teacher uploads their letter, Scoir automatically assigns it to your colleges. Your counselor takes care of sending the letters to your colleges after that.

Heads up! Not all schools allow students to request teacher recommendations in Scoir. Some have counselors manage the process instead. If you’re not sure what your school allows, check with your counselor first.

If your school does allow student requests but you don’t see the option in Scoir, your account may not be properly linked to your school. In that case, contact your counselor for help getting connected. If your school doesn’t use Scoir at all, follow these directions to request teacher recommendations.

Request a recommendation

  1. Before you start, review the recommendation requirements for each college on your list in My Colleges.
  2. Then, to start your request, go to Docs.

  1. Under Letters of Recommendation, click + New Request. If you don’t see this option, your counselor might be handling requests for you, so be sure to check with them to confirm.
  1. In the request form, begin typing in the name of the teacher and choose from the dropdown. If they aren’t listed, they may not be set up in Scoir yet. Let your counselor know, as they can often upload your teacher’s letter on your behalf.
  1. Then choose the type of recommendation. You can select a general recommendation, which can be used for multiple colleges, or a college-specific recommendation (if your school allows it), which can only be used for that college. Add a short message, then click Submit to send your request.
We suggest asking for general recommendations when possible since they can be used across all colleges.
If you're prompted to rank after requesting a recommendation, or see a Rank Recs option in My Colleges > Recs & Docs, your school uses ranking. See this guide instead: How to Request and Rank Your Recommendations.

Tracking your requests

After submitting, you can easily track the progress of your request in Docs. While you can't see the letter itself, here's what each status means:

  • Requested: Your request has been sent and your teacher has been notified.
  • In Progress: Your teacher has started working on your recommendation.
  • Declined: Your teacher was not able to write a recommendation. Hover over the tooltip to see the message they left. You can submit a new request to a different teacher.
  • Completed: Your recommendation is uploaded and ready. Note that "ready" does not mean "sent." Your counselor sends it after it has been assigned to colleges.

These statuses only show progress from your teacher. They don’t mean the letter has been sent to colleges yet.

If you're using an iPhone, download the Scoir mobile app to get a push notification when your teacher completes your request.

Need to cancel a request?

You can cancel a request as long as your teacher hasn’t started it yet. Go to My Colleges > Docs, find the request, and click Cancel. We recommend trying not to cancel at the last minute, as your teacher may have already started working on your letter.

What happens after your teacher submits their letter?

Once your teacher fulfills their recommendation, you'll get a notification in Scoir and by email. Scoir automatically assigns it to your colleges based on the order recommendations were completed.

For example, if one teacher submits their letter first and another submits later, Scoir will use the first one for colleges that only require one recommendation, and add the second one if a college allows or requires more.

Your counselor will then send your recommendations to colleges. A "Completed" status means the letter is ready, not that it has been sent. To check, go to My Colleges, select the college, and scroll down to Application Document Status. A date under Last Sent means your counselor has sent it from Scoir. However, it does not mean that the recommendation has been received by the college.

Note: Colleges receive a high volume of documents, and it can take time for their team to process everything they've received. If your school submitted your recommendations but a college says they’re missing, Scoir Support won’t be able to assist until 14 business days have passed. After that, reach out with a screenshot of your college portal or forward an email from the college confirming what’s missing.
