Transfer & Non-Scoir Students: I added my recommender as "Other" and can't assign their letter to a college

For: Transfer applicants · International students · Students whose high school does not use Scoir

When you request a recommendation letter, you select your recommender’s relationship to you, like Teacher, Employer, or Other. Colleges only accept letters from certain types of recommenders. For example, many require a Teacher, so if your recommender was added as “Other,” their letter won’t appear as an option to assign.

You can’t change the recommender type after sending the request, and Scoir can’t change it either.

If the recommendation hasn’t been assigned to a college, you can delete the recommender and their letter, then send a new request to them and select the correct type (like Teacher). They’ll receive a new email with a submission link and will need to resubmit their letter.

If the recommendation has already been assigned to a college, don’t delete the recommender or their letter. Instead, request a letter from a different recommender and choose the correct type.

Here's how:

  1. Go to My Colleges > Docs & Recs.
  2. In the Letters of Recommendation section, click Delete Recommender
  3. Select the recommender with the wrong type (for example, “Other”). Confirm that you understand deleting the recommender will also delete all associated requests and any completed recommendations, then click Delete.

Then, send them a new request:

  1. Still in Docs & Recs, click + New Request.
  2. Select New Recommender and enter their information. Be sure to select the correct relationship type (for example, "Teacher"). Then, select Add recommender.
  3. Continue filling out the request and submit it. Your recommender will receive a new email with a submission link and will need to upload their recommendation again.
  4. Once the request is sent, go back to My Colleges and open the college you’re applying to. In the Letters of Recommendation section, click Assign to select and assign the request. You can assign the request before your recommender uploads their letter.
  1. Once it is assigned and your recommender submits their letter, it will go to that college automatically overnight. Colleges may take time to process documents, but the date you assigned it is what counts as the receipt date.
If your deadline is very close, your recommender may be able to email their letter directly to the college’s admissions office. Have them include your name and email in the subject line. We suggest checking the college’s website for instructions.
