Configuring Recommendation Settings

Scoir's recommendation settings control how students request letters, how counselors oversee the process, and how teachers submit completed letters.

You must have the Account Administrator role to manage these settings.

Check that “Process Application Materials” is enabled

Recommendation settings are only available if Application Material Processing is turned on. To confirm:

  1. Go to More (•••) > School Settings.
  2. At the top of the page, confirm Process Application Materials is set to Enabled.

If it's not enabled, recommendation settings won't appear. See our guide on enabling Application Material Processing to get started.

Accessing recommendation settings

Go to More (•••) > School Settings and scroll down to Recommendations. If the section is grayed out, Application Material Processing is not yet enabled. See section above.

If your school participates in the Scoir + Common App integration, some settings are locked on by default and will appear grayed out. These are required for the integration to function and cannot be disabled. They are noted below.

Available settings

Allow students to request and assign (if applicable) recommendations

When enabled, students can request recommendation letters from teachers directly in Scoir. You'll set a start grade and date when enabling this. Students won't see the request option until that date is reached.

If “Require assignment of recommendations to specific colleges” is also enabled, students can assign their letters to specific colleges by ranking or manual selection.

Require counselor approval of recommendation requests

When enabled, student requests go to the counselor for review and approval before reaching the teacher.

Allow college-specific recommendation requests

When enabled, students can tie a recommendation request to a specific college. That letter can only be used for that college's application.

Allow teachers to see profiles of students who have requested recommendations

When enabled, teachers can view a student's Scoir profile, including activities, academic overview, and personal bio, when writing their letter.

Choose How Teachers Submit Recommendations

Use the dropdown to select the submission method teachers will use:

  • Type into Scoir
  • Upload PDF
  • Both
Auto-Send Teacher Letters of Recommendations

When enabled, Scoir automatically sends a completed teacher letter to a college once it has been assigned to that college and at least one other document has already been sent.

To enable it:

  1. Click the Contact Scoir Support link at the bottom of this settings section.
  2. Scoir Support will contact you to confirm the details and activate it for your school.
  3. You’ll receive a confirmation email from support@scoir.com once it’s active.

Once active, Scoir sends the letter automatically once another document has been sent to that college first, provided the letter was already assigned to that college beforehand.

Require assignment of recommendations to specific colleges

When enabled, recommendations must be assigned to specific colleges before they can be sent. Assignment is done by ranking or manual selection and can be completed by counselors or students, if the student request setting is also on.

For schools on the Common App integration, this setting is on by default and cannot be turned off. It will appear grayed out.

Include evaluation questions for teachers and counselors

When enabled, teachers must complete all required evaluation fields before submitting a recommendation. This ensures letters meet Common App submission requirements.

Counselors will also see two optional questions during their recommendation flow:

  • How long have you known this student? (100 characters)
  • What words describe this student? (150 characters)
This setting is on by default for all schools. If your school is planning to join the Common App integration, keep this setting enabled. Letters that don't meet evaluation requirements cannot be sent in support of Common App applications.

Don't see this setting? Once the Common App integration goes live for your school, this setting will no longer be visible. It will remain on in the background automatically and cannot be changed.
