Troubleshooting Common App Account Linking

Brad B Updated by Brad B

How linking works

When you connect your accounts, Scoir opens a Common App sign-in window. Whichever Common App account you log into at that moment is the one that gets connected — and everything afterward (your college list, application statuses, FERPA status, your counselor’s ability to submit forms) syncs against that account’s Common App ID (CAID).

Two things follow from this:

  • The account you sign into is the account you get. If you have more than one email address, you may have more than one Common App account.
  • Once linked, changing your email or name won’t break anything. The connection is keyed to your CAID, not your profile details. (One exception: your high school selection — see below.)

One more thing worth knowing: typing a Common App ID into Scoir does not connect anything. The sign-in flow above is the only way to establish the connection — an ID entered by hand syncs nothing.

Problems and fixes

“I connected the wrong Common App account”

How to confirm: compare the Common App ID shown in Scoir with the CAID you see when logged into the Common App account you actually use. If they don’t match, the wrong account is connected.

How to fix: contact Scoir support — disconnecting a wrong account is a support action; you can’t do it yourself. Include:

  • Both CAIDs (the one in Scoir and the correct one)
  • The email address on the correct account

That’s everything support needs to resolve it in one touch.

⚠️ Counselors: archiving a student does disconnect their Common App — but it also severs their connection to your school entirely. It is never the fix for a wrong-account link.

“My counselor can’t submit my forms / my recommendations stopped working — and I changed my high school in Common App”

Your high school selection in Common App is what connects your account to your school’s Scoir integration. Changing or removing it after linking can prevent or disrupt your counselor’s form and recommendation submissions.

The fix is yours to make, and it’s quick: in Common App, go to My Common Application → Education → Current or Most Recent Secondary/High School and re-select your correct school. The connection heals once the right school is back in place.

(If you actually changed high schools — a real transfer — talk to your counselor instead; that’s a different situation with its own process.)

“I can’t find the option to connect”

Work through these:

  1. The integration is for current seniors. Students in other class years won’t see the connect option.
  2. Confirm your school participates in the integration. Linking is available to students at Scoir schools that have opted in. If you’re not sure, ask your counselor. If your school doesn’t participate, see Using Scoir & Common App if Your School Doesn’t Connect Them instead.
  3. Confirm the cycle is open. Account linking for the new application cycle begins when Common App opens on August 1. (Common App also goes offline for a few days in late July while it wraps up the previous cycle — connecting is unavailable for everyone during that window. See Common App System Refresh: What to Expect in Scoir.
  4. Check that you have an assigned counselor in Scoir. Students without an assigned counselor can’t complete the connection — you’ll see a message directing you to contact your school’s counseling staff. Once a counselor is assigned, you can proceed.

Graduated or on a gap year? The integration supports current seniors. Application documents for alumni are sent through Scoir’s traditional document sending instead — your counselor handles this; see Sending Documents for Alumni.

“Linking fails or shows a message mid-process”
  • Don’t close the browser or app mid-connection. Complete the Common App sign-in without navigating away — interrupting the flow is a common cause of failed connections. If it happens, start the connection again from the beginning.
  • “It appears you are already connected.” This is a Common App–side state where the account registers as already connected — to Scoir or to another partner platform. Try connecting one more time; it can resolve itself. If it still fails, contact Scoir support — that state usually needs assistance to clear.
  • Prompted to go back to Common App and sign your FERPA? That’s not an error — it’s the system telling you your colleges won’t fully sync until the CA FERPA is complete. Sign it in Common App and continue.
  • Sign-in itself failing? Confirm you can log in directly at commonapp.org with the same credentials — password resets happen on Common App’s side, not Scoir’s. If the connection still fails after all of the above, contact Scoir support with a screenshot and the email you’re signing in with.
“I added a college in Scoir before connecting, and it says queued

That’s a waiting state, not an error. A college added in Scoir with Common App as the application method before your accounts are connected sits queued until the Common App side is ready. To release it: connect your accounts, add that college in Common App, complete the CA FERPA, and select your start term — then it syncs and proceeds normally.

“I linked successfully, but my colleges / statuses / FERPA aren’t showing up in Scoir”

Syncing requires two things, not one: your accounts must be linked and your CA FERPA must be complete. If you’ve linked but haven’t finished the Common App side:

  1. In Common App, make sure your high school info is complete and you’ve added at least one college — that’s what unlocks the Recommenders & FERPA section.
  2. Complete the FERPA release authorization there.
  3. Sync is near real time — your college list and application info should appear in Scoir within minutes of both conditions being met. If it doesn’t, don’t wait it out: see Troubleshooting FERPA Status in Scoir for the diagnosis path (wrong account is the most common cause).

For counselors: triaging linking at scale

Your roster shows two columns for this: CA Connection and CA FERPA. Filters live under the Common App Status heading — Account Connection Status and FERPA Release Authorization Status. During August–September, filtering for students missing either one gives you the chase list; both must be complete before you can prepare and submit forms on a student’s behalf.

Two more counselor notes: students need an assigned counselor to connect at all — make sure counselor assignments are done before August 1, or your unassigned students will hit a wall on day one. And for Common App–method colleges, Common App is the source of truth: statuses flow CA → Scoir (round selected = Applying, submitted = Applied), so status corrections belong on the CA side, not in Scoir.
